John D. Minton Jr. sworn in as chief justice of Kentucky June 27

Justice John D. Minton Jr. was sworn in June 27 as Kentucky's fifth chief justice by Chief Justice Joseph E. Lambert in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the Capitol. His wife and children joined him at the formal investiture service. They are, from left, Chief Justice Lambert, daughter Page Sullivan Minton, wife Susan Page Minton, son John D. Minton III and Chief Justice Minton. As chief justice, he will serve as executive head of the Kentucky judicial system and oversee the 4,000 statewide employees of the Kentucky Court of Justice, including elected justices, judges and circuit court clerks. Chief Justice Lambert retires today after 10 years as chief justice and 22 years as a Supreme Court justice.

Gallatin County dedicates courthouse addition and renovation

Gallatin County Courthouse DedicationA dedication ceremony for the Gallatin County Courthouse addition and renovation was held on June 25 in Warsaw. Retired Chief Justice Joseph E. Lambert and Gallatin County Judge Executive Kenny R. French were among the speakers at the event. The Kentucky General Assembly authorized the $2.7 million project in 2005 and approved its funding in 2006. The Louis & Henry Group of Louisville served as the architect and Klenco Construction Co. of Taylor Mill was the construction manager. The Kentucky Association of Counties was the financial agent.

Jan Rogers elected KACCC president of Kentucky

Jan RogersAnderson County Circuit Court Clerk Jan Rogers has been elected by her fellow clerks to serve as president of the Kentucky Association of Circuit Court Clerks. Her term will run from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009. Rogers has 25 years of experience in the Anderson County Office of Circuit Court Clerk. She served as a deputy clerk from 1983 until her election to circuit court clerk in 1993. Prior to being named president of the KACCC, she served the association as secretary and chairwoman of the Bylaws Committee and is currently chairwoman of the Drivers Licensing Committee.

"It's an honor to be elected president of an association that has played an important role for more than 100 years," said Rogers. "I look forward to working with Chief Justice John Minton, my fellow circuit clerks and Administrative Office of the Courts personnel to better serve citizens through the Offices of Circuit Court Clerk across the state. I also appreciate the hard work and dedication of my staff who will help lighten my workload while I carry out my new duties."

Teachers invited to attend free institute on teaching civic ed July 22-25 in Frankfort

Teachers across Kentucky can improve their skills in teaching civic education at a free training program July 22-25 in Frankfort. The Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts and the national Center for Civic Education will sponsor a free summer institute for teachers about the We the People … the Citizen and the Constitution program and civic education.
